The Children and Orphanages we support
It is estimated that over 100,000 children in Ukraine live in orphanages and are homeless or orphaned as a result of extreme economic and social conditions. Some of these children actually have loving parents or grandparents who are too poor to provide adequate shelter, clothing and food for them. Many of these children have no hope of ever being adopted.
Many of the older children we support truly understand the gravity of their situation and know what awaits them when they leave the orphanage. They “age-out” of the orphanage system sometime between 15 and 17 yrs old depending on capacity of the particular orphanage they live in. They are then left to fend for themselves on the streets, with little training or life skills to make it on their own. With no guidance or assistance from family, many turn to drugs, crime and prostitution. The suicide and death rates for these kids are staggering.
Sadly, the crowded institutions where these children live are severely underfunded by the Ukrainian government and living conditions are meager, to say the least. Currently, with over 100,000 children in orphanages and approximately 8000 new children entering the system every year, help is greatly needed.
Orphans’ Hope Foundation has been established to provide aid to children in these orphanages.
Our first "target" orphanage is located in the town of Borzna, located about a three hour drive northeast of Kyiv. Approximately 200 children between the ages of 5 and 17 live here in buildings that are in a sad state of disrepair. There are only a few indoor toilets and showers. In the winter the buildings where the children live, learn and eat are cold and drafty. Children often wear hats, coats and mittens while INDOORS. Educational supplies are few, and properly fitting clothing and shoes are in short supply. Be sure to click on the "Borzna Pictures" page to the left.
